Thurmond, a World War II veteran awarded five battle stars and seventeen decorations, medals and awards, was Governor of South Carolina from 1947-1951. In 1948 he was the States' Rights (Dixiecrat) candidate for President of the United States. Thurmond won 39 electoral votes and four southern states. On November 3, 1954 he became the only U.S. Senator ever elected as a write-in candidate. He served in the U.S. Senate from December 24, 1954 to April 4, 1956 and since November 7, 1956. On September 17, 1964, Thurmond switched parties from Democrat to Republican. Celebrating his 97th birthday last December 5th, he is the oldest person ever to serve in Congress and the longest-serving member in Senate. His current term in the U.S. Senate will expire on January 3, 2003, 29 days after his 100th birthday. Lightly rippled at bottom blank edge, else fine condition.
