The U.S. Senator from South Carolina inscribes a reproduction of an illustration of him to "a great American".
Illustration inscribed and signed: "To a great American/Bill Wilkerson,/Strom Thurmond". B/w, 8x10. Reproduction of a bust drawing of the U.S. Senator by Chapiesky. StromThurmond (1902-2003), a WWII veteran awarded five battle stars and seventeen decorations, medals and awards, was Governor of South Carolina from 1947-1951. In 1948, he was the States' Rights (Dixiecrat) candidate for President of the U.S., winning 39 electoral votes and four southern states. On November 3, 1954, Thurmond became the only U.S. Senator ever elected as a write-in candidate. He served as U.S. Senator from South Carolina from December 24, 1954 to April 4, 1956 and November 7, 1956-January 3, 2003. On September 17, 1964, Thurmond switched parties from Democrat to Republican. When he retired 29 days after his 100th birthday, Thurmond was the oldest person ever to serve in Congress and the longest-serving member of the U.S. Senate. Lightly creased. Minor glue stain (barely visible) to right of inscription, slightly soiled at lower left margin. Fine condition.
