Promissory Note Signed: "Stu Phillips", 9x3½. Nashville,
Tennessee, 1968 March 11. First American National Bank of Nashville
promissory note. Phillips agrees to pay $5,830 to the bank within 30 days
at "interest from date at the legal rate". Stamped as paid on "April 22, 1968"

Ole Opry in 1967, the year before he signed this note. Phillips, who had his
own band at an early age, had hosted a number of Canadian radio variety
shows (Stu for Breakfast, Town and Country, Cowtown
Jamboree), moved to television (host of The Outrider and a
stint on Red River Jamboree) and released a successful album,
Echoes of the Canadian Foothills, before moving to Nashville in 1965.
There, he was the host of a local morning show and signed a recording contract
with RCA Records. Phillips, who had such hits as "Bracero", "The Great El
Tigre", "Vin Rose" and "Jaunita Jones", made some 20 guest appearances at the
Opry before becoming a member. In addition to touring with the Opry, he has
toured extensively abroad. Inducted into the Canadian Country Music
Hall of Fame in 1993, Phillips became a U.S. citizen five years later. An
ordained minister in the Episcopalian Church, Phillips has released
several Christian recordings, including his single, "Only God". Lightly
creased with folds, not at signature. Bank stamp on front touches the upper loop
of the "S" in Stu. Slightly soiled at blank right margin and on verso. Ink and
pencil notes (unknown hands) at upper and left margins. Otherwise, fine
