STUART "STU" ERWIN (1903-1967) is best known for his 1950-1955 TV series, Trouble With Father, later called The Stu Erwin Show. The sitcom co-starred Erwin's wife, actress June Collyer, to whom he was married from July 22, 1931 until his death on December 21, 1967. The couple, who had two children, had acted together for 20 years before their TV outing. Erwin, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Pigskin Parade (1936), had made his film debut in 1928 in Mother Knows Best. His other film credits include The Band Plays On, Viva Villa! and Palooka (all 1934), I'll Take Romance (1937), Our Town and When the Daltons Rode (both 1940), Heaven Only Knows (1947), For the Love of Mike (1960) and Son of Flubber (1963). Erwin, who debuted on Broadway in 1942, was also seen frequently on the small screen. In addition to another series, The Greatest Show on Earth (1963-1964), he made several TV movies and appeared as a guest star on shows from Crossroads (1957) to Gentle Ben (1967). WILLIAM FIFE KNOWLAND (1908-1974) represented California in the U.S. Senate from 1945-1959. Knowland, who served as Republican Senate Majority Leader (1953-1955) and Minority Leader (1955-1959), had previously served in the California State Assembly (1933-1935) and State Senate (1935-1939). Also a veteran of WWII, he committed suicide in 1974. Radio and television commentator ELMER PETERSON appeared as himself in two films, It Grows on Trees (1952) and The Girl Who Had Everything (1953). George R. Sanders, originally a disc jockey, became a prominent radio/TV interview host, first in Los Angeles and later in Portland.
