STUART HOLMES
AFTRA membership application signed by veteran actor Stuart Holmes. His career stretched from the silent era to the television era and included roles in almost 500 movies and TV shows.
Document signed "Stvart [sic] Holmes" in blue ink. Blue and black ink notations in unknown hand. 2 pages, 6x8½, 1 sheet, front and verso. With 6¼x3¼ initiation fee receipt carbon copy with perforated left edge stapled at top edge. Membership form for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Veteran actor Stuart (1884-1971) had a busy career that stretched from the early days of silents to the television era. His resume includes roles in almost 500 movies and TV shows between 1909 and 1964, most of them uncredited. Stuart was often cast in villainous roles in silents; he certainly looked the part, with his oily mustache and malevolent visage. You can see him doing dastardly deeds as Black Michael in the 1922 adaptation of The Prisoner of Zenda and in countless westerns and comedy shorts of the period. But he just didn't have the voice for a heavy. He got more benign roles with the advent of talkies and, by the 1930s, was even playing solid citizens. Lightly toned and creased. Form has light tear in right edge. Receipt has carbon copy marks and was folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
