STUART ROBSON
The comic stage actor replies to a playwright: "Your play is first rate ... but it won't do for me." Dated in 1900!
Autograph Letter Signed: "Stuart Robson", 1 page, 4½x7. Highlands, New Jersey, 1900 August 31. To "My Dear Mr. Kidder", in full: "I like your play, first rate - it is beautifully written but it won't do for me. I wish you would write something in my way - believe me I would be delighted to do a play of yours. Sincerely always, etc." STUART ROBSON (1836-1903), born Henry Robson Stuart, was an American comedic stage actor known for his distinctive voice, often called "the Robson squeak." He appeared on stage for 40 years, collapsing on stage at his final performance only days before his death. For twenty years he formed a comedy team with William Henry Crane; they were especially popular as the two Dromios in Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors. This letter was probably written to Edward E. Kidder (1849-1927), author of over 20 Broadway and touring plays, beginning in 1883. Normal mailing folds. Toned, lightly creased. Edges worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
