STUART ROBSON and FANNY DAVENPORT
Robson's and Davenport's signed sentiments dated in 1896.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Very Sincerely from/Stuart
Robson/Dec. 30th 1896" and on verso, "Fanny Davenport/Marwellia
long/Farewell/1896" , 7x4. Stuart Robson (1836-1903), born Henry
Robson Stuart, was an American comedic stage actor known for his distinctive
voice, often called "the Robson squeak." He appeared on stage for 40 years,
collapsing on stage at his final performance only days before his death. For
twenty years he formed a comedy team with William Henry Crane; they were
especially popular as the two Dromios in Shakespeare's A Comedy of
Errors. English-born American stage actress Fanny Davenport
(1850-1898) made her debut at the age of 12 as the King of Spain in Faint
Heart Never Won Fair Lady. In 1869, she joined the famed company of
Augustin Daly, which traveled across the U.S. and toured England, Germany
and France, presenting adaptations of foreign works and revivals of
Shakespearean comedies. Leaving to form her own company, Davenport
appeared in such plays as Sardous Fedora (1883) and Cleopatra
(1890), making her final appearance on March 25, 1898, shortly before her death.
Fanny was the daughter of American stage actor Edward Loomis Davenport
(1816-1877) and English stage actress Fanny Vining. Toned. Left edge
lightly frayed from binding. Otherwise, fine condition.
