GENERAL DOUGLAS MacARTHUR FOUNDATION: SUSAN WOOD
As Administrative Assistant of the Foundation, she signs a typed 1990 letter forwarding a signed photo of Mrs. MacArthur.
Typed Letter signed: "Susan H. Wood", 1 page, 8½x11. Norfolk, Virginia, 1990 November 5. On letterhead of the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation to Joyce Lucas, Tempe, Arizona. In full: "Mrs. MacArthur is no longer able to handle all of her correspondence. She forwarded your letter to the foundation for reply. She appreciated your kind remarks and wishes you well in your endeavors. Enclosed is an autographed picture of you for her collection. [Item not included.] I am sorry that we cannot enclose extra pictures for your roommates but additional copies are unavailable. Sincerely". The General Douglas MacArthur Foundation was established in 1962 to commemorate the achievements and spirit of General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964), who commanded US Army forces in the Pacific Theater of World War II and UN Forces in the Korean conflict (until dismissed by President Truman in April 1951 for publicly disagreeing with Presidential policy on conduct of the war). While his military achievements, including the Inchon landing which turned the tide of the Korean War, were considerable, his greatest contribution to history may have been overseeing, as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, the transition of Japan from warlike dictatorship to peaceful democracy in the 5 years between the wars. He was one of only five Americans in history to achieve the rank of General of the Army (five stars). Jean MacArthur (1898-2000), the General's second wife, was wed to him from 1937 until his death. Jean MacArthur was with her husband during the ordeal of defending the Philippines from Japanese invasion (1941-1942), departing with him for Australia only when he was ordered to depart by President Roosevelt, and returned with him in triumph to the islands in 1944-1945. After the General's death, Mrs. MacArthur represented him on imporant occasions, and herself was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Reagan in 1988. The General Douglas MacArthur Foundation headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, house the MacArthur Papers and many exhibits. The Foundation funds research and publications related to Douglas MacArthur's career, and bestows awards and scholarships. Mailing fold, not near signature. Fine condition.
