SUSANNA FOSTER
The actress who starred in the 1943 film version of The Phantom of the Opera signed
this index card in blue ink
Signature: “Susanna Foster”. 5x3 index card. Susanna Foster (1924-2009) was brought to
Hollywood at the age of 12 by MGM to study and become a star - two of her classmates were
Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. After declining the lead role in National Velvet (1944)
because there was no singing, she was dropped by MGM. Paramount signed her to debut
in The Great Victor Herbert (1939) opposite Mary Martin and Allan Jones - giving her
another chance. Her movies came quickly and included Phantom of the Opera (1943) but
in 1945 she quit to rescue her two teenage sisters from their abusive and alcoholic
mother. Foster achieved acclaim on stage in Naughty Marietta (1948) and married Wilbur
Evans, the leading man from the production. Despite several comeback attempts, the stars
never quite aligned for Foster again. She passed away while living at the Lillian Booth Actor's
Home in 2009. Lightly toned. Note on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
