SUZANNE FARRELL
Youthful close up of the prodigy of George Balanchine, founder of the Suzanne Farrell Ballet at the Kennedy Center
Photograph signed: "Suzanne Farrell", in blue ink. B/w, 8x10. Regarded as the greatest American lyric ballerina of the 20th century, Suzanne Farrell (b.1945) has had an extensive career in dance, teaching and performance. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Farrell became a prominent dancer in the New York City Ballet in 1961 with the close guidance of George Balanchine and his School of American Ballet. By 1965 she was a principal dancer of the NYCB, later debuting under her new title at the Paris Opera. After a romantic fall out with Balanchine in the early seventies, Farrell left NYCB only to return in 1975 to Balanchine, with whom she continued to perform. Some of her best known works include Chacoone, Mozartiana, Tzigane and Davidsbundlertanz. After Balanchine's death in 1983, Farrell continued to dance with the NYCB until 1989 when she retired at the age of 44. For the next several years she taught at American Universities while touring around the globe to teach Balanchine's works to next generation ballet dancers. In 2000, she launched her own dance company, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet which is now produced by the Kennedy Center. The documentary The Elusive Muse (1996) follows Farrell and Balanchine as they worked together through her youth and into her rise to stardom. Photographer's stamps on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
