Photograph signed: "Svetlana Beriosova". B/w, 3½x5½. Svetlana Beriosova (1932-1998), the daughter of a Russian ballet master, made her professional debut with the Ottawa Ballet in 1947. Performing with several companies, she had become by 1955 the prima ballerina of Sadler's Wells. Known for her elegant classical style, she also excelled in a comic role as Swanilda in Coppelia. In addition to a broad classical repertoire, she created leading parts in several modern works, including Cranko's Antigone (1959) and Ashton's Persephone (1961). She retired in 1975, but remained a respected teacher. She was the godmother of actress Julie Andrews. Signature lightly beaded, but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
