SWEN SWENSON
The actor writes to John Willis, Editor of Theatre World, updating him on his time in L.A. and apologizing for missing the Theatre World Award party
Autograph letter signed: "Swen", in black ink, 1 page, 6x7¾. In part: "Dear John, Thinking of my "Annie" hitch here in L.A. this month. Two rather exciting things brewing - expect to stay here in L.A. for the present. Hope you saw my page in Weekly Variety November 28th. Sorry to have missed the Theatre World Award Party - still the best theatre serial event of the year". Broadway dancer and singer Swen Swenson (1932-1993) was featured in several Broadway musicals, including Wildcat (1961), Little Me (Tony nomination, 1963) and a revival of Can Can (1981). The gay activist, who owned the world's largest collection of carousel animals, succumbed to AIDS-related illness. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Corners slightly worn and creased. Fine condition.
