SWING, COWBOY, SWING MOVIE CAST: CAL SHRUM and ALTA LEE
Shown with other members of the Rhythm Rangers in a still from the 1946 film
Photograph signed: "Howdy/Cal/Shrum", "To/Jerry/Alta/Lee". B/w, 10x8. Western musician and actor CAL SHRUM (1910-1996) is best known for his work with two groups, the Colorado Hillbillies (with his brother Walt) and his own spin-off group, the Rhythm Rangers. The Shrum brothers broadened their exposure to an entire nation of fans after an appearance in the 1938 Gene Autry film, The Old Barn Dance. Cal went on to appear in another eight films through 1949, including Swing, Cowboy, Swing (which he produced as well as starred in). Shrum, who had a popular hit with "Heaven Bound Train", a tribute to Hank Williams, also launched the careers of a number of country stars, including Tex Williams, before he became a radio performer in Springfield, Illinois in the 1960s. American actress ALTA LEE (1924-2010) was born in Spalding, Illinois. After beginning her career as a cabaret singer, she appeared as a singer in the 1940 film Scatterbrain where she met actor Cal Shrum. The two married and appeared together in two western musicals Swing, Cowboy, Swing (1946) and Trouble at Melody Mesa (1949). Shrum and Lee were the top-billed stars of Swing, Cowboy, Swing, playing second leads behind Brad King and Lorraine Miller in Trouble at Melody Mesa. Corners slightly worn. Fine condition.
