The British physician and Ministry of Health officer signs this handwritten letter to a friend regarding advice on getting a friend a nursing job

In part: "My dear Edward, I am very sorry not to have answered your letter before, but I have been most fearfully busy of late. There certainly is considerable difference in the status of the nurses at different Hospitals, although your friend would probably be safe in entering at any of the larger ones... yours ever". Sydney Arthur Monckton Copeman K.St.J (1862-1947) was a British medical doctor and senior medical officer in the Ministry of Health. After graduating from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1882, he went on to undergo medical training at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He obtained a post-graduate MD at Cambridge University in 1890 and in 1891 became a medical inspector with the Local Government Board, which later was replaced by the Ministry of Health in 1919. In 1898 he delivered the Milroy Lecture on Vaccination - Its Natural History and Pathology, published as a book in the following year and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1899. Following his retirement from the Ministry of Health, Copeman entered local government. He was a member of Hampstead Borough Council, where he was chairman of the public health committee, and was elected to the London County Council as a Municipal Reform Party councilor representing Hampstead in 1934.
