bequeathing his estate to capitalize a fund " ... the interest on which shall be
annually distributed as prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall
have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. ..." Above and below the statement
are superimposed images of the front and verso of the Nobel medallion. In
2002, SYDNEY BRENNER of the Molecular Sciences Institute,
Berkeley, California; H. ROBERT HORVITZ of the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and JOHN E. SULSTON, of the Sanger
Centre, Cambridge, U.K., were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine
"for their discoveries concerning genetic regulataion of organ development and
programmed cell death." Alfred Nobel (1833-1996), a Swedish chemist and arms
manufacturer and the inventor of dynamite, bequeathed his estate for the annual
awards. Nobel is said to have conceived after he read a premature obituary
claiming that he had devoted his life to finding ways to kill more people
faster. Fine condition.
