SYDNEY CHAPLIN

The brother of famous actor Charlie Chaplin signs this check for $50.00 in blue ink

Check Signed: “Sidney Chaplin” in blue ink. 6½x2¾. September 6, 1956. Check no. w/n. Drawn from the account of Sidney Chaplin at City National Bank in Hollywood, California. Payable for $50.00 to Billy Reed's Little Club. Sydney Chaplin (1885-1965), the elder half-brother of famed film comedian Charlie Chaplin, appeared in his own comedies beginning in 1915. His A Submarine Pirate, released that year, was Keystone's second most successful film, after Charlie Chaplin's Tillie's Punctured Romance. The brothers appeared together on stage, but not - apparently - in films. For several years, Sydney acted as his brother's business manager. He appeared in a few more films through 1929, but his acting career ended abruptly that year when he bit off the nipple of actress Molly Wright. (She filed sexual assault charges.) Chaplin fled England (plus his contract with British International Pictures and some back taxes), and declared bankruptcy in 1930. He lived quietly, mostly on the European continent, for the rest of his life. Soiled. Bank stamps throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
