Autograph Letter signed: "S Morgan", 1 p, 4¼x7, affixed in

Morgan/1777-1859." No place, 1858 May 8. To Antonio Gallenga. In full:
"Will you take tea here on Sunday Evening at 8 o clock. Just returned
to Town. Something better in [illegible] is not in sight. Yours A
dieu." Ango-Irish novelist SYDNEY MORGAN (1781-1859) took London by storm
with The Wild Irish Girl (1806), a paean of praise to Ireland. She
became the companion of the Marquess of Abercorn, who in 1812 arranged
her marriage to a surgeon, Sir Thomas Charles Morgan. As a married woman
she continued to produce verses, essays and novels, including
O'Donnel (1814) - considered her best novel - and France (1817), a
breezy, journalistic survey of French society and politics which drew criticism
for its praise of the French revolution. GALLENGA (1810-1895) was an Italian
journalist and author sympathetic to nationalism and revolution, resident for
many years in England. Bottom edge irregular. Slight smears to some lettering in
letter, but clearly legible. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
