In full: "'For a long time, directors have been confused about whether they belong to management or labor. It has been quite a dance, but I've concluded the director is part of management. If you're going to control the project, you've got to (be a producer).'" Signed the year Pollack was Executive Producer of The Fabulous Baker Boys. Director, producer, executive producer and actor Sydney Pollack (born in 1934) won the 1985 Academy Award for Best Director for Out of Africa and was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Director in 1969 (They Shoot Horses, Don't They?) and 1982 (Tootsie, in which he also appeared). He also directed The Slender Thread (1965, his directorial debut), This Property is Condemned (1966), The Way We Were (1973), Three Days of The Condor (1975), The Electric Horseman (1979), Absence of Malice (1981), The Firm (1993), Sabrina (1995) and Random Hearts (1999) and the early TV series The Defenders, The Naked City, The Fugitive, Dr. Kildare and Ben Casey. Pollack was also the producer of The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) and Presumed Innocent (1990) and executive producer of Iris (2001) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). He appeared in Husbands and Wives (1992), Sense and Sensibility (1995) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999) and guest starred on the TV series The Twilight Zone (1960), Frasier (1994) and Mad About You (1998) as well as early TV dramas.
