SYLVIA PORTER
Signed letter to fellow economics author Caroline Bird
Typed Letter signed: "Sylvia", 1 page, 8½x11. New York, N.
Y., 1976 March 30. On letterhead of the Field Newspaper Syndicate to
Caroline Bird, Poughkeepsie, N. Y. In full: "Thank you so much for
your clippings. I was utterly thrilled to receive them! For weeks now I have
been plotting a whole column on your 'Enterprising Women' and I shall get to it
very soon. I will alert you as to when it will run, so that you in turn can
alert Norton. Always my love to you, and the best to your husband."
Economist and journalistSylvia Porter (1913-1994) was a bond
adviser to an investment firm before starting her own syndicated financial
column in 1934. For the first 8 years, she wrote as S. F. Porter, fearing
that financial advice from a woman would not be well received, but as Sylvia
Porter she would reach an estimated 40 million readers with her knack
for translating abstruse economic concepts into everyday language.
Successive editions of Sylvia Porter's Money Book were big sellers.
Caroline Bird (b. 1918), the letter's recipient, has a resume similar to
Porter's. Her titles tend to be more provocative, however, as in her The Case
Against College (1975). Lightly toned. Multiple mailing folds. Corners
lightly creased. Fine condition.
