SYLVIA SIDNEY
Vintage photo, very youthful image in broad patterned collar, signed for collector Saul Goodman
Photograph signed: "Sylvia Sidney". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso date signature September 7, 1936. Promotional caption affixed on verso touts her co-starring role with Spencer Tracy in Mob Rule. Sylvia Sidney (1910-1999) was often cast in crime dramas during the 1930s, usually playing the sister or girl friend of a gangster. After her first starring role in City Streets (1931), she was featured in such dramas as Alfred Hitchcock's Sabotage and Fritz Lang's Fury (both 1936). She starred opposite James Cagney in Blood on the Sun (1945), and was cast as Fantine in Les Miserables (1952). Her Broadway appearances spanned 50 years (1927-1977). Returning to the big screen, she was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress in Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams (1973). Later films included Finnegan Begin Again (1985) and Mars Attacks (1996, as the grandmother whose Slim Whitman records prove lethal to the aliens). Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners lightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
