Known as the "First Lady of Country Music" and the "Heroine of Heartbreak", Tammy Wynette (1942-1998), born Virginia Wynette Pugh, dominated the country music charts in the late 1960s and early 1970s. By 1989, Wynette, the first female country singer to have a million-selling album, had sold more than 30 million records and had racked up 39 Top 10 hits, including 20 No. 1 singles, 11 No. 1 albums. She released her first single, "Apartment #9", in 1966, and had her first No. 1 hit, "My Elusive Dream", the following year. Among her other hits are "Take Me to Your World", "D-I-V-O-R-C-E", "Stand By Your Man", which was also the title of her 1979 biography and a biographical film, "Singing My Song" and "The Ways to Love a Man". In 1968, she teamed up with George Jones, whom she would marry, for a series of duets. The first, "Take Me", was a No. 1 hit. In 1993, Wynette teamed up with Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn for the landmark album, Honky Tonk Angels. The recipient of a number of awards, Wynette was CMA (Country Music Alliance) Female Vocalist of the year in 1968, 1969 and 1970 and won Grammys in 1967 and 1969. She was inducted posthumously into the Country Music Hall of Fame (1998). Fine condition.
