TED KEY He penned this cartoon of Hazel the maid on his personalized stationery and signed it "Best wishes". Accompanied by original mailing envelope, which was postmarked in 1963 Inscribed Original Art Signed:"Best Wishes from Ted Key" in blue ink. 7x10 ½, on Key's personalized stationery. This cartoon features Key's best-known character, the maid Hazel, in her maid's uniform and saying "HI,/PETER!" in a speech bubble. Accompanied by: Unsigned envelope, postmarked Morristown, Pennsyvania, March 10, 1963. Addressed to Peter B. Shikes, Merchantville, New Jersey. With 5¢ stamp affixed and "Ted Key" inscribed on flap. Key (1912-2008, born Theodore Keyser in Fresno, California) was an American cartoonist and writer. He's probably best known for creating the single-panel comic strip Hazel, a wry housemaid who made her debut in the Saturday Evening Post in 1943. Hazel was a regular feature in the magazine for 26 years before moving to newspaper syndication in 1969. Hazel was also featured in 12 of the more than 20 books written and illustrated by Key, who also created the 1960 comic strip Diz and Liz and wrote national advertising campaigns and stories for three Disney movies. Letter is lightly toned and creased. Random ink stains. Pinhole at top edge. Envelope is lightly toned, stained and soiled. Top edge has been neatly cut open. Otherwise, fine condition.
