TERENCE RATTIGAN and SIR JOHN GIELGUD
Signatures by the Tony and Oscar-nominated writer and the Oscar-winning actor
Signatures: "Terence Rattigan" in blue ink and "John Gielgud." in black ink. 5½x4 leaf with rounded top right corner. British play and screenwrighter TERENCE RATTIGAN (1911-1977) found success on both the stage and silver screen. His play Separate Tables was nominated for Best Play at the 1957 Tony Awards; the 1958 film adaptation also earned him a Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. He also received an Oscar nomination for Best Story and Screenplay for Breaking the Sound Barrier (1952). A playwright who preferred understatement to sturm und drang, Rattigan fell somewhat out of favor after John Osborne's Look Back in Anger (1956) and the "Angry Young Men" movement of the 1950s, but is now recognized as one of the best playwrights of the 20th Century. He wrote his first play in 1933. A total of 15 of his plays were produced on Broadway between 1934 and 1975; he also had over 70 writing credits, either as screenwriter or for original material, between 1936 and 1999. One of the theatre's greatest legends, SIR JOHN GIELGUD (1904-2000) spent almost 80 of the 96 years of his life appearing in countless plays that saw him portray every major Shakespearean role. He worked up to a month before his death, performing in over 50 films and numerous television productions when he was not busy with his stage work. He won British Academy Awards for Best Actor in 1954 for the role of Cassius in Julius Caesar and Best Supporting Actor in 1975 for portraying Mr. Beddoes in Murder on the Orient Express. He was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1965 for his role of King Louis VII in Becket and won in 1982 for portraying Hobson, Arthur's valet, in Arthur. Lightly creased. Missing bottom right corner. Lightly discolored at right edge (does not touch right edge). Neatly torn from album at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
