TERRY ALLENSmall full-length b/w photo of Allen as Flyweight Champion of the world, signed with his "Best wishes" Inscribed photograph signed "To Norman/Best Wishes/Terry Allen". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. B/w, 3¾x7¾ overall, 3¼x7¾ image, printed on cardstock. Captioned: "Terry Allen/Worlds' Flyweight Champion". Allen (1924-1987) was a British five-foot-two flyweight boxer who fought, and sometimes won, against numerous flyweight champs between 1942 and 1954, including Rinty Monaghan and Honore Pratesi. He came from a boxing family - his father and six of his cousins were professional boxers - and started boxing when he was nine, reportedly winning 102 of 107 amateur matches. Allen amassed an excellent 61-31-1 career record with 18 knockouts, and he won his first 32 pro bouts, between 1942 and 1945, without a single loss and with 11 knockouts. He challenged Monagahan for the Flyweight Champion of the World belt on Sept. 30, 1949. This bout was fought to a draw. However, Monaghan retired and relinquished his belts soon after this fight, and on April 25, 1950, he successfully challenged Pratesi for the world flyweight title. He lost it in his next fight, to Dado Marino. Allen lost more often than not after this, although he did manage to briefly claim various lesser flyweight titles. After retiring, he became a fruit seller. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Light impressions and scratches on image (not visible head-on). Light impressions on image from notations on verso (not visible head-on). Otherwise in fine condition.
