TERRY SANFORD
Typed Letter signed, regarding a Texan's letter misplaced during Sanford's 1972 Presidential campaign.
Typed Letter signed: "Terry Sanford", 1 page, 7¼x10½. No place, 1973 February 23. On personal letterhead to J. L. Pruett, Clute, Texas. In full: "A former staff member from the campaign last year has just come to me with your letter, which had been delivered to the Durham campaign headquarters and apparently misplaced. Although I realize that it is too late to be of any help to you in the Special Education course you were teaching, I still wanted to write you and to let you know how much I personally appreciate your interest. With best wishes always, Sincerely". James Terry Sanford (1917-1998), a combat veteran of World War II and practicing lawyer, was elected Governor of North Carolina (1961-1965). A Democrat close to President Kennedy, Sanford was held up as a model of the "new South," opposing segregation, increasing funding of education, and attracting high tech industry to the state, but he was criticized heavily for raising taxes. Sanford was President of Duke University (1969-1985), while launching two markedly unsuccessful campaigns for the Presidential nomination in 1972 and 1976. He served in the US Senate from 1986 to 1993. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
