TERRY SANFORD
As Governor of North Carolina, he signs a typed letter inviting a New Yorker to come visit.
Typed Letter signed: "Terry Sanford" as Governor, 1 page, 7x9½. Raleigh, North Carolina, 1962 December 18. On official letterhead to James T. Broughton, New York, N.Y. In full: "I appreciate your letter and I enjoyed your comments. Please come to see me some time when you are in North Carolina. With best wishes always, Sincerely". James Terry Sanford (1917-1998), a combat veteran of World War II and practicing lawyer, was elected Governor of North Carolina (1961-1965). A Democrat close to President Kennedy, Sanford was held up as a model of the "new South," opposing segregation, increasing funding of education, and attracting high tech industry to the state, but he was criticized heavily for raising taxes. Sanford was President of Duke University (1969-1985), while launching two markedly unsuccessful campaigns for the Presidential nomination in 1972 and 1976. He served in the US Senate from 1986 to 1993. Horizontal mailing fold at center. Lightly creased and stained. Otherwise, fine condition.
