Manager Houk, in his first year at the helm, brought in Sain as pitching coach and produced a team whose pitching and defense, as well as its more heralded hitting, were the best in the league. The team finished the regular season with a dominant 109-53 record, finishing first in the American League by eight games. The club led the league in runs scored (827) and home runs (240), while posting a team ERA of 3.46 underscoring the strength of a pitching staff coached by Sain that would prove critical in October. The team faced the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series, clinching the championship in Game 5 at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Fine condition.
