THE 1961 NEW YORK YANKEES: CLETE BOYER, TONY KUBEK, BOBBY RICHARDSON, and BILL “MOOSE” SKOWRON These members of the World Series-winning team considered by some to be the best team ever assembled signed this black and white photograph featuring them in uniform Photograph Signed: “Clete Boyer/ #6”, “Tony Kubek/ #10”, “Bobby Richardson/ #1”, and “Moose Skowron/ #14”. 10x8. B/w. The 1961 New York Yankees go down in MLB history as one of the greatest teams of all time. Even among their fellow World Series champions over the decades, this roster is one of the best of all time. The team hit a then-record 207 home runs, spearheaded by Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. Maris, of course, hit a single-season record of 61 home runs. The signers of this photograph were generally more defensive-minded, however. They made up the starting infield for the '61 Yankees. CLETE BOYER (1937-2007) played for three teams during his MLB career that spanned seventeen seasons. With a career batting average of .242, he was best known as a strong third baseman who could also fill in at second base and shortstop. Starting at second base was BOBBY RICHARDSON (b. 1935), a solid hitter better known for his glove. He was named the 1960 World Series MVP even though the Yankees lost. He won the World Series three times (1958, 1961, and 1962), earned five Gold Gloves, and formed a superb double-play duo with TONY KUBEK (b. 1935). Of the four starting infielders, the best hitter was BILL “MOOSE” SKOWRON (b. 1930-2012), a member of the “Murderers Row” of the 1961 squad. He hit 28 four-baggers that year, a career high. Fine condition.
