NEW YORK METS (1969)
Mets batting helmet signed by 23 members of the World Championship team
Helmet signed by 23 team members: Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Donn Clendenon (adding "69 W. S. MVP"), Jerry Grote, Jerry Koosman, J. C. Martin, Bud Harrelson, Ed Kranepool, Duffy Dyer, Jim McAndrew, Wayne Garrett, Amos Otis, Joe Pignatano (coach), Ed Charles, Al Weis, Ron Swoboda, Don Cardwell, J. C. Martin, and 5 others. In all 23 signatures. Riddell replica batting helmet in Mets colors with team logo. This was perhaps the greatest "Cinderella" team of all time. The Mets, lovable losers, had never finished higher than ninth place in seven prior seasons in the 10-team National League. Nine and a half games behind another would-be Cinderella, the Chicago Cubs, in early August, the Mets surged back to win the East in the first year of divisional alignments, defeated the favored Atlanta Braves for the NL playoff, and then whipped the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in five games to win their first World Series. Seaver and Ryan are in the Hall of Fame. Several other signers had solid careers with the Mets and - in the case of Amos Otis - with the Kansas City Royals. A few of the others made little lasting mark on baseball, But in 1969, all were heroes. Fine condition.
