THE ARNELLO AFFAIR MOVIE CAST
The pair sign their names with warm wishes, also indicating the film and its release year
Inscribed Photograph signed: "To Dick Fisher/best wishes/George Murphy", "To Dick -/"The Arnello Affair"/1947/Sincerely/Francis Gifford", B/w 8x10. Dancer/actor GEORGE  MURPHY (1902-1992) appeared in film musicals of the 1930s, moving to dramatic roles in the late 1940s. He followed a path similar to that of his friend Ronald Reagan: switching party allegiance from Democratic to Republican, serving as President of the Screen Actors Guild, and winning election to the U.S. Senate from California in 1964. FRANCES GIFFORD (1920-1994) moved up from small roles to leading ones in the late 1930s, co-starring with her first husband, James Dunn in 1939's Mercy Plane. Soon after, she starred as Nyoka in the Edgar Rice Burroughs-based serial, Jungle Girl (1941). She was back in the jungle two years later, co-starring with Johnny Weissmuller in Tarzan Triumphs (1943). Moving to MGM, Gifford seemed poised to break through to major stardom in films like The Arnelo Affair (1947); then she suffered a catastrophic auto accident in 1948. Although she made comeback attempts, notably Sky Commando (1953), she continued to suffer from physical infirmities and mental illness. Corners slightly worn. Ink notes (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
