MURPHY (1902-1992) appeared in film musicals of the 1930s, moving to dramatic roles
in the late 1940s. He followed a path similar to that of his friend Ronald Reagan: switching
party allegiance from Democratic to Republican, serving as President of the Screen Actors
Guild, and winning election to the U.S. Senate from California in 1964. FRANCES
GIFFORD (1920-1994) moved up from small roles to leading ones in the late 1930s,
co-starring with her first husband, James Dunn in 1939's Mercy Plane. Soon after, she starred
as Nyoka in the Edgar Rice Burroughs-based serial, Jungle Girl (1941). She was back in the
jungle two years later, co-starring with Johnny Weissmuller in Tarzan Triumphs (1943).
Moving to MGM, Gifford seemed poised to break through to major stardom in films like
The Arnelo Affair (1947); then she suffered a catastrophic auto accident in 1948.
Although she made comeback attempts, notably Sky Commando (1953), she continued to
suffer from physical infirmities and mental illness. Corners slightly worn. Ink notes (unknown
