ATLANTA BRAVES (1999): CHIPPER JONES, TOM GLAVINE, JOHN SMOLTZ, ANDRUW JONES
and others
Eight stars of the baseball dynasty sign a ball.
Baseball signed: "Chipper Jones" [on the sweet spot], "Tom
Glavine", "John Smoltz", "Brett Boone", "Andruw Jones", "Don Baylor", "Leo
Mazzoni" and one unidentified signature. Rawlings official National League
baseball, Leonard S. Coleman, President. In all 8 signers. It's no coincidence
that the Atlanta Braves made the playoffs in eleven consecutive seasons after
Larry Wayne "CHIPPER" JONES won a regular spot on the team in 1995. The
5-time All-Star (1996-1998, 2000-2001) was the National League's Most
Valuable Player in 1999, hitting 41 homers (for the second time) and
slugging .633. Jones moved from 3B to LF in 2002. After 16 seasons with the
Atlanta Braves, on one of the finest pitching staffs in Major League history,
TOM GLAVINE joined the New York Mets in 2003. An 8-time All-Star,
Glavine won the Cy Young Award in 1991 and 1998, finishing second or
third in the voting four more times. (Three of those four times he was edged out
by teammate Greg Maddux.) A 5-time 20-game winner, leading the league
each time, the durable Glavine led the league in starts six times. He was named
Most Valuable Player of the 1995 World Series. Early in 2007, JOHN
SMOLTZ won his 200th regular season game for the Atlanta Braves, the team for
whom he has played since reaching the Major Leagues in 1988. That doesn't count
his 15-4 record in postseason play. The Cy Young Award winner in
1996, Smoltz has been on seven All-Star teams through 2005. Part of
baseball's finest rotation in the 1990s, Smoltz switched to the closer role for
four years (2001-2004), then returned to the starting rotation. Centerfielder ANDRUW JONES, who joined the team
during its championship 1996 season, is outstanding in the field, with excellent
range and a strong, accurate arm. He earned nine consecutive Gold Gloves and
five All-Star berths through 2006. He can also hit a little, knocking
over 30 homers in five of his first seven full seasons. He led the
National League in homers with 51 in 2005. BRETT BOONE played
2B for the Braves in 1999, his only year with the club. Three-time All-Star
and 4-time Gold Glove Boone played most of his 13-year Major League career
with the Seattle Mariners. He's a third generation Major Leaguer, along
with grandfather Ray Boone, father Bob Boone, and brother Aaron. DON
BAYLOR, who played 19 Major League seasons (1970-1988) with seven American
League clubs, was the AL's Most Valuable Player in 1979 and hit 338 career home
runs. Baylor, who has managed the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs, was a
Braves coach in 1999, as was LEO MAZZONI, never a Major League player but
a long-time successful pitching coach with the Braves. He left the team to join
the Baltimore Orioles in the same capacity after the 2005 season.Toned.
