BALTIMORE ORIOLES and RIVALS (1983-1984); JOHN WILLIAMS
Eight players, coaches and announcers of the World Champion O's sign a sheet also signed by two All-Star rivals (Roger Clemens & Dave Winfield), and by famed composer John Williams.
Signatures: "Cal Ripken", "Roger Clemens", "Tippy Martinez", "Dennis Martinez", "Benny Ayala", "Eddie Yost", "Mike Boddicker", "To Paul/Tom Marr/'Orioles Radio'" and on verso "John Williams", "Dave/Winfield" and 1 unidentified signer, 5x8. In all eleven signers. The Baltimore Orioles were World Champions in 1983 under manager Joe Altobelli. After a regular season of 98-64, the O's whipped the Chicago White Sox in the American League Championship Series and then overmatched the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series, 4 games to 1. Since signer Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox did not reach the Major Leagues until 1984, this sheet was probably signed during that season, when the Orioles finished a respectable 85-77, but all ten Orioles signing here were returning from the championship year. Orioles signers include pitchers MIKE BODDICKER, TIPPY MARTINEZ and DENNIS MARTINEZ, outfielder BENNY AYALA, and three members of the coaching staff: pitching coach RAY MILLER, bench coach CAL RIPKEN, SR. (father of Hall of Fame shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr.), and third base coach EDDIE YOST. Also signing (an inscribing) is TOM MARR, the Orioles' play by play radio announcer (1979-1986) and more recently a conservative talk show host in Baltimore. Boddicker was a stalwart of the Orioles pitching staff in their World Series season, going 16-8, plus a victory each in the ALCS and World Series. Tippy Martinez was the reliable closer for the world champs, saving two games of the 1984 Series. Dennis Martinez struggled in the starting rotation in 1983 and again in 1984, but his stellar record in earlier and later seasons would notch 245 career wins, including 108 with the Orioles. Benny Ayala, a reserve outfielder, played for the O's in both the 1979 and 1983 Series, driving in a run in his only at bat against the Phils. The non-Orioles represented here are, of course, quite significant. Pitcher ROGER CLEMENS won the Cy Young Award a record seven times, six times in the American League (1986, 1987, and 1991 Boston Red Sox; 1997 and 1998 Toronto Blue Jays; 2001 New York Yankees) and once in the National League (2004 Houston Astros). He retired after the 2007 season with 354 career victories. Despite allegations of steroid use, Clemens is a cinch for admission to the Hall of Fame. DAVE WINFIELD amassed 3,110 hits, 465 home runs and 1,833 RBIs, putting him in a class with the great modern sluggers. In 1986 he became the first Yankee since Joe DiMaggio to drive in over 100 runs in five consecutive seasons. Winfield was voted an All-Star from 1977-1988, and he led the League in RBIs in 1979. He also played for the San Diego Padres, California Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians. The recipient of seven Gold Glove Awards, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001, his first year of eligibility. Composer JOHN WILLIAMS, nominated for 41 Academy Awards since 1968, won five. Among his dozens of movie scores are Jaws, Superman, Star Wars, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. He was conductor of the Boston Popos Orchestra from 1980 to 1995. Toned. Lightly frayed at right edge. Tape at right edge. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
