BALTIMORE ORIOLES (1989)
American League (Brown) baseball, signed by 31 members of the club
Baseball signed: "Frank Robinson" (sweet spot as manager), "Stan Jefferson", "Mike Devereux", "Dave Johnson", "Mark Thurmond", "Mickey Tettleton", "Bob Milacki", "Bill Ripken", "Bob Melvin", "Phil Bradley", "Mark Williamson", "Jim Traber", "Dave Schmidt", "Cal Ripken [Sr.]", "Curt Motton", "Jamie Quirk", "Cal Ripken [Jr.]", "Steve Finley", "Craig Worthington", "Brady Anderson", "Randy Milligan", "Gregg Olson", "Larry Sheets", "Johnny Oates", "Rene Gonzales", "Pete Harnisch", "Tom McCraw", "Jeff Ballard", "Keith Moreland" and 2 unidentified signatures. In all 31 signers. Rawlings Official American League Baseball, Bobby Brown, President. The 1989 Baltimore Orioles finished 87-75 under manager FRANK ROBINSON, good for second place in the always tough American League East. It was the best Orioles season in a dry interval between their most recent World Championship (1983) and their next playoff appearance (1996). The ball contains two Hall of Fame signers (Frank Robinson and CAL RIPKEN, JR.), and all three of the Ripken's: coach CAL RIPKEN, SR. and second baseman BILLY RIPKEN. Cal Jr. is best remembered, of course, for holding baseball's longest streak of consecutive games played (2,632), but the Ripken brothers are the most recent siblings to be a double play combination on a Major League team. Robinson was Major League Baseball's first black manager (starting in 1975 with Cleveland), but is even more famous as a player: winner of the Most Valuable Player award in both leagues (NL 1961, AL 1966), winning the coveted and now rare batting triple crown in the latter year. Signers also include seven first-string position players: MICKEY TETTLETON (C), RANDY MILLIGAN (1B), CRAIG WORTHINGTON (3B), PHIL BRADLEY and MIKE DEVEREAUX (outfielders), LARRY SHEETS (DH), and of course Cal (SS) and Billy (2B) Ripken. The five most frequent starting pitchers are here: BOB MILACKI, JEFF BALLARD, DAVE SCHMIDT, PETE HARNISCH and DAVE JOHNSON; as are the three most frequent relievers: MARK THURMOND, MARK WILLIAMSON and closer GREGG OLSON. Members of the coaching staff include CURT MOTTON (who played for the 1970 World Champion Orioles), and JOHNNY OATES, who would succeed Robinson as team manager in 1991. A nice collection. Lightly toned at "Phil Bradley". Fine condition.
