THE BAND WAGON MOVIE CAST: FRED ASTAIRE and CYD CHARISSE
Signed b/w publicity photo from The Band Wagon of Astaire in a light-colored suit and Charisse in a long dress, both of them dancing
Photograph signed "Fred Astaire" and "Cyd Charisse". B/w, 8x10. As they appeared in the film. The Band Wagon, nominated for three 1954 Academy Awards, including Best Music.ASTAIRE (1899-1987, born Frederic Austerlitz, Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska) began his career touring in the vaudeville circuit with his sister Adele as a dancing partner. After many stage hits, he was given a screen test resulting in the famous verdict: "Can't act. Slightly bald. Can dance a little." In the 1930s, he was paired with Ginger Rogers in ten films and continued to dominate musical films in the 1940s. Astaire was a recipient of a special Academy Awardin 1949 for his contribution to films and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Towering Inferno in 1974. "When you've danced with Cyd Charisse, you stay danced with." So said Fred Astaire, in tribute to the ability and allure of his last big-screen dancing partner. CHARISSE (1921-2008, born Tula Ellice Finklea in Amarillo, Texas), one of film's best dancers, spent her childhood studying ballet. At age 13, she joined the Ballet Russe. Five years later, in 1940, during a tour of Europe, she married Nico Charisse, her ballet instructor; she was later married to Tony Martin. Charisse starred with Fred Astaire in The Band Wagon (1953) and Silk Stockings (1957) and with Gene Kelly in Words and Music (1948), Singin' in the Rain (1952), Brigadoon (1954), Deep in My Heart (1954), It's Always Fair Weather (1955) and Invitation to the Dance (1956). Charisse, Astaire and Kelly costarred in Ziegfeld Follies (1946). Fine condition.
