THE BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE STREET PLAY CAST CO-SIGNED BY: KATHARINE CORNELL and BRIAN AHERNE
Black and white of the Tony Award winning actress and Academy Award nominated actor
Photograph signed: "and mine/Brian Aherne" and "Best Wishes/Katharine Cornell". B/w, 10x8. ©1957, Loew's Inc. Captioned at lower margin. In 1956, Katharine Cornell and Brian Aherne recreated the roles of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, which they had originated in the 1931 Broadway play, in the television production of The Barretts of Wimpole Street. The original Broadway play marked British actor Aherne's first U.S. stage appearance, and was the first of a number of appearances that Cornell and Aherne would make together. They were also teamed up in two Broadway revivals of The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1935 and 1945) and appeared together on Broadway in Lucrece (1932), Romeo and Juliet (1934), Saint Joan (1936), The Constant Wife (1952) and Dear Liar (1960). Stage and screen actress KATHARINE CORNELL (1898-1974), who was known as "The First Lady of the American Theater", won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Anthony and Cleopatra (1948). She also appeared in a number of feature films, including Stage Door Canteen (1943), and narrated The Unconquered (1954), the story of Helen Keller. British actor BRIAN AHERNE (1902-1986) was also the star of a number of feature films, appearing opposite some of the screen's most popular leading ladies. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of doomed Emperor Maximillian in Juarez (1939). The brother of character actor Patrick Aherne, leading man Brian was married to actress Joan Fontaine from 1939-1945. Defects from original negative have reproduced at background, horizontal surface striation at upper background. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Overall, fine condition.
