George Harrison (1943-2001) was an English musician, singer-songwriter, and guitarist, best known as the lead guitarist of the Beatles. Born in Liverpool, England, Harrison developed an early passion for music, influenced by skiffle and rock and roll. He joined John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the Quarrymen in 1958, which evolved into the Beatles. Though initially overshadowed as a songwriter by Lennon and McCartney, Harrison contributed notable compositions to the Beatles' catalog, including "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Here Comes the Sun," and "Something," the latter becoming one of the group's most celebrated love songs. Following the Beatles' breakup in 1970, Harrison launched a successful solo career, beginning with the critically acclaimed triple album All Things Must Pass, which featured the hit singles "My Sweet Lord" and "What Is Life." He also organized the landmark Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, one of the first major benefit concerts, which raised awareness and funds for refugees. Harrison continued to release solo albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Living in the Material World (1973) and Cloud Nine (1987), the latter featuring the popular single "Got My Mind Set on You." He was also a founding member of the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, collaborating with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne.
