BROOKLYN DODGERS (1955)
Color 10x8 composite photo of the three winning pitchers in the Dodgers'
first ever World Championship against a backdrop of Ebbets Field, signed by all
three hurlers.
Photograph signed: "Clem Labine", "Johnny Podres", "Roger Craig".
Color 10x8. Although the Brooklyn Dodgers had appeared in several World
Series, dating back to 1920, they had never won one. Finally that year,
Brooklyn's beloved "bums", loaded with talent but still considered underdogs to
the cross-town Yankee dynasty, which had whipped them in 1947, 1949, 1952 and
1953, came out on top. To make the victory even more thrilling, "the Boys of
Summer", to use the title of a celebrated book by Roger Kahn, came back to win
after losing the first two games, something never before accomplished in the
World Series. CLEM LABINE won Game 4 in relief, and finished up for
victorious starter ROGER CRAIG in Game 5. JOHNNY PODRES, a 9-10 pitcher in the
regular season, threw complete games in Games 3 and 7, allowing only two runs in
18 innings and being named Series MVP. The '55 World Championship would
prove to be Brooklyn's only one; the team departed for the West Coast after the
1958 season. Ebbets Field was torn down in 1960, replaced by apartment
buildings, but many baseball fans still visit the site. Clem Labine died on
March 2, 2007; Johnny Podres on January 13, 2008. Fine
condition.
