Champs". B/w, 20x15. 6 Signatures in all. This photo captures a turning point in the 1955 World Series, the only World Championship won by the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Dodgers had appeared in seven previous World Series, losing all seven, the last five (1941,1947,1949,1952 and 1953) to their hated cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees. The 1955 Series, again against the Yankees, started badly, with the Yanks winning the first two games at home. Up to that point in baseball history, no team had ever lost the first two games of the Series and come back to win. But the Dodgers swept games 3-5 at Ebbets Field, lost Game 6 in Yankee Stadium, but came back to win Game 7. Recorded here is the game-winning run scoring in the pivotal third game. This is not a grand slam homer, as some descriptions of this photo previously posted on the web mistakenly claim. Pee Wee Reese walks to first base; Junior Gilliam trots to second, Series MVP and winning pitcher Johnny Podres (in warm-up jacket) strolls to third; while Sandy Amoros, who would save Game 7 with a miraculous catch, comes home with Brooklyn's fourth run. Duke Snider waits to bat next. Jackie Robinson, who had started the rally with a single, had scored on the previous play. The Dodgers won the Game 8-3, and went on to victory. DUKE SNIDER, one of the three great centerfielders of New York baseball in the 1950s (with Mantle and Mays), hit four home runs in the 1955 Series. JOHNNY PODRES, only a 9-10 pitcher in the regular season, earned his Series MVP award with clutch victories in Games 3 and 7. Pitchers ROBER CRAIG and CLEM LABINE picked up the other two Brooklyn wins. GEORGE SHUBA, an early advocate for Jackie Robinson, had delivered a pinch-hit home run against the Yankees in the 1953 Series, but now suffering from a knee injury, came to bat only once in the 1955 Series, his last baseball appearance. BOB BORKOWSKI, a late season pickup from the Reds, did not appear in the Series. Fine condition.
