THE BUCCANEER
Signed script for deMille's War of 1812 epic.
Original Script for the 1938 motion picture signed on the cast page (first page) by: Director
"C.B. deMille", "Fredric March" as Jean Lafitte, "Franciska Gaal" as Gretchen, "Akim Tamiroff" as Dominique, "Beulah Bondi" as Aunt Charlotte, "Anthony Quinn" as Beluche and "Jack Hubbard" as Charles, 192p, 8½x11, bound separate sheets in hardcover leather. DeMILLE directed the Paramount historic epic.MARCH played the 18th century pirate Jean Lafitte. GAAL was Gretchen, a Dutch maiden rescued from a sinking ship. TAMIROFF was Dominque You, BONDI was Aunt Charlotte, QUINN was Beluche and HUBBARD was Charles. This script is divided into five dated sequences, from July 30, 1937 to August 4, 1937. The fifth sequence ends with General Andrew Jackson setting Jean Lafitte free: "Jackson takes his watch from his pocket, looks at it -- then to Lafitte. JACKSON Your hour's begun, Lafitte. LAFITTE Thank you General. Jackson stares at him, appreciating his courage while condemning him." The final sixth sequence, with Lafitte and Gretchen on board his ship, is not present. In 1958, deMille was set to direct a remake of The Buccaneer but he became ill and he chose his son-in-law, Anthony Quinn to direct; deMille was Executive Producer of the new version starring Charlton Heston (Jackson) and Yul Brynner (Lafitte). Signature page lightly foxed, soiled and creased with some wear at edges. 2-inch diagonal tear at lower edge repaired on verso. ¼-inch tear next to it (not repaired but all intact). Other pages, overall, fine condition. Covers and spine in fine condition.
