CALIFORNIA ANGELS (1979)
Angels souvenir baseball signed by 28 team members, including Hall of Famer Rod Carew
Baseball Signed: "Jim Fregosi" (sweet spot), "Bob Clark", "D LaRoche", "Willie Aikens", "Carney Lansford", "Jim Anderson", "Dave Frost", "Bob Grich", "Merv Rettenmund", "Dan Ford", "Rod Carew", "Frank Tanana", "James Barr", "Brian Downing", "Rick Miller", "Mike Barlow", "Mark Clear", "Dyar Miller", "Don Baylor", "Joe Rudi", "O Ramirez", "Terry Humphrey", "Chris Knapp", "Bert Campaneris", "Larry Sherry", "Don Aase", "Willie Davis" and 1 unidentified signature (very faint not legible). The 1979 California Angels won the American League West, with an 88-74 record under manager JIM FREGOSI (himself a former star shortstop for the Angels). They lost the American League Championship Series to the Baltimore Orioles. Signers on this ball include the starting regulars at every position: catcher BRIAN DOWNING, first baseman and future Hall of Famer ROD CAREW, second baseman BOBBY GRICH, third baseman CARNEY LANSFORD, shortstop BERT CAMPANERIS, left fielder DON BAYLOR, center fielder RICK MILLER, right fielder DAN FORD, and designated hitter WILLIE AIKENS. Also present are starting pitchers FRANK TANANA, DAVE FROST, JIM BARR, CHRIS KNAPP and DON AASE. Closer MARK CLEAR is joined here by bull pen members DAVE LA ROCHE, MIKE BARLOW and DYAR MILLER. Not as often in the starting lineup, but contributing to the team's winning record, were catcher TERRY HUMPHREY, infielders JIM ANDERSON and ORLANDO RAMIREZ, outfielders JOE RUDI, WILLIE DAVIS and BOB CLARK, and pinch hitter/DH MERV RETTENMUND and pitching coach LARRY SHERRY. Many of these signers appeared in one or more All-Star Games: Carew (18 times), Fregosi, Grich and Campaneris (6 each), Rudi, Davis, Tanana and La Roche (twice each), with one-time selections for Downing, Lansford and Baylor. The Angels, despite many postseason appearances, have yet to appear in a World Series, but many of the signers of this ball did: four times by Rettenmund (Baltimore Orioles 1979-1981, Cincinnati Reds 1976), three times each for Campaneris and Rudi with the 1972-1974 Oakland A's, Lansford (1988-1990 A's), and Willie Davis (LA Dodgers (1963, 1965-1966), and three consecutive appearances with three different teams for Don Baylor (1986 Boston Red Sox, 1987 Minnesota Twins, 1988 A's). Appearing in one World Series were Sherry (1959 LA Dodgers), Miller (1975 Red Sox), Aikens (1980 Kansas City Royals), LaRoche (1981 New York Yankees) and Ford (1983 Orioles). A nice collection! Toned and soiled. Multiple signature light but most legible. Unknown stains throughout ball effecting signatures.
