THE CHOIRBOYS MOVIE CAST: LOUIS GOSSETT, JR, CHARLES DURNING
The stars of The Choirboys Lou Gossett, Jr. and Charles Durning both sign this still from the 1977 comedy.
Photograph signed: "Always/Louis Gossett Jr", in blue ink, and "Thank you,/Charles/Durning", in black ink. B/w, 10x8. Film description printed on verso. The 1977 film The Choirboys is a crime comedy following cops Spermwhale Whalen (Durning) and Calvin Motts (Gossett, Jr.) who, in need of relieving pressure from their jobs, rally a group of late night debauchers to take on the city in wild charades. Based off the Joseph Wambaugh novel of the same name.Louis Gossett, Jr. (b.1936), who won an Emmy Award in 1977 for portraying "Fiddler" in the TV miniseries, Roots, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1982 for portraying the tough drill sergeant, Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley, in An Officer and a Gentleman. Gossett, the first Black actor to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, had made his film debut in 1961's A Raisin in the Sun. In addition to his long list of feature films, he has also been seen in made-for-TV movies and miniseries, was a regular on several TV series and made guest appearances on numerous TV shows. Charles Durning's (1923-2012) film roles increased in size and importance after his interpretation of a crooked cop in the Oscar-winning The Sting (1973). He went on to appear in several Burt Reynolds films, most memorably as the singing governor in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982). That performance landed him an Oscar nomination, as did his spin on "Concentration Camp" Erhardt in the 1983 remake of To Be or Not to Be. In 1975, Durning was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of ulcerated police lieutenant Moretti in the theatrical feature Dog Day Afternoon (1975); he finally won that award 15 years later for his work as "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald in the TV miniseries The Kennedys of Massachusetts. Other notable film roles to his credit include An Enemy of the People (1978), Tootsie (1982) and Hudsucker Proxy (1994). Lightly bowed. Staple holes at lower left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
