THE CIMARRON KID: CO-SIGNED BY HIGH O'BRIAN and JAMES BEST
The actors are shown standing alongside Audie Murphy and Glenn Ford in this publicity photograph for the 1952 film The Cimarron Kid
Photograph signed: "Happiness/ Hugh O'Brian" and "James Best", B/w 10x8. In this film starring Audie Murphy as The Cimarron Kid, James best played the character Bitter Creek Dalton and Hugh O'Brian played the character Red Buck. James Best (1926-2015) played character parts, often a bad guy, in many film Westerns, including Seven Angry Men (1955), Ride Lonesom (1959) and Firecreek (1968). But he could also play other roles, including a psychiatrist in Three on a Couch (1966) and a cross-dresser in Ode to Billy Joe (1976). He made many TV guest appearances, but may be best remembered from his role as Sheriff Rosco Coltrane from The Dukes of Hazzard (1979-1985), engaged in countless unsuccessful car chases. Best is a cousin of the 1950s rockabilly duo, Don and Phil Everly. Although he appeared in several films in the early 1950s, Hugh O'Brian (1925-2016) did not become a star until he earned the title role in the popular TV series The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp (1955-1961). This show, which debuted the same year that Gunsmoke and Cheyenne did, helped usher in a new era of Westerns. For many years after this series, O'Brian resisted offers of Western roles, gradually relenting to appear in John Wayne's last film, The Shootist (1976) and then in TV recreations of his Earp role, including The Gambler Returns (1991). O'Brian starred in another shorter lived series, Probe (1972-1973). Other productions he appeared in include Twins (1988) and Old Soldiers (2016). In 1954, the actor won the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. O'Brian founded Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) in 1958 and it continues to be an organization that develops leadership skills in high school students across the country. Fine condition.
