Show Bill signed: "Rosemary Harris", "John Cromwell", "Jane White", 24 pages, 6¾x9. Playbill for a production of Climate of Eden, by Moss Hart, at New York's Martin Beck Theatre, 1952, signed on the cast page. English actress ROSEMARY HARRIS (b. 1927) made her West End debut in The Seven Year Itch in 1952, her Broadway debut Troilus and Cressida (1956). In between she appeared in her first film, Beau Brummel (1954) Harris, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Old Vic, won a Tony as Eleanor in The Lion in Winter (1966) and no less than four Drama Desk Awards between 1972 and 1985. She won an Emmy for Notorious Woman on Masterpiece Theatre, and earned an Oscar nomination for Tom and Viv (1994). She has lived for 40 years in North Carolina with her husband, writer John Ehle. Their daughter is noted stage and screen actress Jennifer Ehle. JOHN CROMWELL (1887-1979) made his Broadway acting debut in Little Women (1912), and appeared on stage there in several shows, including George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara (1915). He made his film debut in a comedy, The Dummy (1929), but his skill as a director soon became apparent Beginning with The Mighty that same year, he directed a long string of well known movies, including Tom Sawyer (1930), Of Human Bondage (1934), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940), Anna and the King of Siam (1946) and The Racket (1951). He was President of the Screen Actors Guild (1944-1946), but was blacklisted in Hollywood in the 1950s. He still acted on stage and film from time to time, appearing in two Robert Altman films of the late 1970s (3 Women and A Wedding). He was the father of actor James Cromwell. Film and stage actress JANE WHITE (1922-2011) daughter to Walter Francis White (of the NAACP) made her Broadway stage debut in Strange Fruit (1946). While the play opened to mixed reviews, White received praise from former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt in her column "My Day". White continued on Broadway as well as off-Broadway gaining recognition and acting in titles such as; The Insect Comedy (1948), Razzle Dazzle (1951), The Climate of Eden (1952), Take a Giant Step (1953), Jane Eyre (1958) and Once Upon and Mattress (1959). White received an Obie Award in 1971 for sustained achievement, and in 1979 she starred in Jane White, Who? a self-written one-woman cabaret show. In addition to a successful Broadway career, White has also left her mark in the screen world as well, being one of the first African-American actresses to play a roll under contract as Lyndia Holliday, R.N. on The Edge of Night (1979).
