signed: "V Johnson" for Regr. of Treasy., 3¼x1½. No place, payable 1865 July 1. Coupon
for six months' interest ("Thirty-Five Dollars") on Bond No. 21248 for $1,000. The bond issue
of February 20, 1863 was one of several issued by the Confederacy during the American Civil
War (1861-1865). These bonds, in various amounts and at various interest rates, were sold to
raise monies for desperately needed supplies and food for beleaguered Confederate troops.
The bearers of Confederate bonds, which were guaranteed by the South's exports of
cotton, tobacco and naval supplies, were primarily European investors. Due to a
successful Union blockade, the South found it increasingly difficult to export cotton, leading to
the demise of the Southern economy -- and default on many Confederate bonds. Fine
condition.
