THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS MOVIE CAST: DOROTHY McGUIRE and ROBERT PRESTON
Shown together in a scene from the 1960 film in this publicity photograph.
Inscribed Photograph signed: "For Tommy McCabe/All My Best/Robert Preston" and "For Tommy McCabe/Thank You/Dorothy McGuire", B/w 10x8. Publicity photograph for the 1960 film The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. In the film Preston plays Rubin Flood, a man who must deal with his family's issues after he is laid off from his job as a traveling salesman, McGuire plays his wife Cora Flood. American actor Robert Preston (1918-1987), born Robert Preston Meservey, had already made nearly 40 films from 1938, playing second leads in most, when he became a big star of Broadway musicals. He won Tony awards for his performance as con man Harold Hill in The Music Man (1958), a role he repeated in the hit film four years later, and for I Do! I Do! (1966); he also received a Tony nod for and he was nominated in the same category in 1975 for Mack & Mabel (1975). He also received an Oscar nomination for Victor/Victoria (1982). Modern audiences may know him best from his final movie appearance, as a fast-talking alien con man in The Last Starfighter (1984). In all, Preston appeared in over 70 movies and TV shows between 1938 and 1987. Dorothy McGuire (1916-2001, born in Omaha, Nebraska) was an American actress with over 50 TV shows and movies to her credit between 1943 and 1990. McGuire made her stage debut in Omaha in A Kiss for Cinderella at age 13, opposite fellow Omaha native Henry Fonda, before heading to Broadway in 1938. On Broadway, she started as an understudy and eventual replacement in the role of Emily Webb in Our Town, the first of eight Broadway performances. Her most successful Broadway performance was Claudia, a comedy that ran 722 performances between 1941 and 1943 and which launched her movie career. McGuire's first role was in the stage adaptation of Claudia. McGuire's roles fluctuated between comedies (Three Coins in the Fountain, 1954), character parts (Friendly Persuasion, 1956) and drama (Gentleman's Agreement, 1947, for which she received an Oscar nomination). Notable roles include Katie Nolan, the beleaguered wife in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945) and the Virgin Mary (at age 46!) in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965). Her TV performances included Rich Man Poor Man (1976) and Little Women (1979). Slightly creased. Lightly worn at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
