THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN: MARLENE DIETRICH and CESAR ROMERO
Still from their 1935 film, The Devil Is a Woman.
Photograph signed: "Marlene Dietrich" and inscribed and signed "To Anne Hughes/All best wishes from/Cesar Romero". B/w, 10x8. Still from the 1935 Paramount film, The Devil is a Woman, which starred Dietrich as Concha Perez and Romero as Antonio Galvan. Directed by Josef von Sternberg, the film also co-starred Lionel Atwill, Edward Everett Horton and Alison Skipworth. According to the Internet Movie Database, "The Spanish government threatened to bar all Paramount films from Spain and its territories unless the film was withdrawn from worldwide circulation. They protested the unfavorable portrayal of Spanish police. Paramount destroyed the original print after its initial run, and it remained out of circulation until 1959." In 1935, Romero was also seen on the big screen in eight other feature films: Clive of India, The Good Fairy, Cardinal Richelieu, Hold 'Em Yale, Diamond Jim, Metropolitan, Rendezvous and Show Them No Mercy! German-born actress MARLENE DIETRICH (1901-1992) was already known in Europe as a singer and live performer when she achieved film stardom in two 1930 releases: The Blue Angel and Morocco (Academy Award nomination for Best Actress). Paramount's answer to MGM's Greta Garbo, Dietrich was for a time in the 1930s the world's most highly paid actress. Her films were later banned by the Nazis in her native Germany, and she played a key role in U.S. wartime efforts, singing her hit "Lilli Marlene" on many USO tours. A Broadway actor from 1927 and film performer from 1933, CESAR ROMERO (1907-1994) often played comic second leads. He said that his favorite movie role was that of Cortez in The Captain from Castille (1947). Romero's TV roles included "The Joker" on Batman (1966-1968) and Peter Stavros, who married Jane Wyman's Angela Channing on Falcon Crest (1985-1988). Lightly creased at blank margins and corners. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on). Light impression of another of Romero's signature (from signing another item on top of this one) touches two words of inscription. Overall, fine condition.
