Playbill for a production of The Dresser at the Brooks
Atkinson Theatre in New York. TOM COURTENAY (b. 1937) born in Hull,
Humberside, England, is an English actor with a long and distinguished stage
career, as well as almost 40 TV shows and movie to his credit. He debuted with
the Old Vic company in London's West End in 1960. He played the title role in
Billy Liar from Albert Finney in 1961, a role that he reprised in
the 1963 film adaptation. Courtenay's memorable film roles include rebellious
Colin Smith in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962),
Pasha Antipov in Doctor Zhivago (1965), and as Norman, dresser for
Finney's character in The Dresser (1981). Courtenay was
nominated for acting Oscars for his roles in Doctor Zhivago and The
Dresser, as well as Tonys for his roles in Otherwise Engaged (1977)
and a 1982 stage adaptation of The Dresser. He was knighted in 2001.
English stage and screen actor PAUL ROGERS (1917-2013) won a Tony as Best
Actor for Harold' Pinter's The Homecoming (1967). He won a Drama Desk
Award as Best Supporting Actor for The Importance of Being Earnest
(1961), and received another Tony nomination for Photo Finish (1963).
In 1971, Rogers took over the role of Andrew Wyke from Anthony Quayle in
the original Broadway production of Sleuth (a role played by Laurence
Olivier in the 1972 film and by Michael Caine in the 2007 version). A longtime
member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, he has played major roles in the
Bard's plays on stage and television. A frequent presence on British (and
occasionally US) TV from the mid-1950s to mid 1990s, he appeared occasionally in
feature films. LISABETH BARTLETT (b. 1956) would make one more Broadway
appearance after this one, with multiple roles in Execution of Justice
(1986). She can be seen briefly in the film Amadeus (1984), performing on
stage in Mozart's The Magic Flute. MARGE REDMOND (b. 1930), a New
York stage veteran, may be best remembered for her Emmy-nominated role as
Sister Jacqueline in The Flying Nun (1967-1970), and for her savvy
innkeeper, "Sarah Tucker," on TV Cool Whip commercials of the 1970s. She was
married for a time to Jack Weston, replaced by Gardenia in the California
Suite cast. RACHEL GURNEY (1920-2001), a British actress is probably
best known as Lady Marjorie Bellamy in the British TV show Upstairs
Downstairs. (She reportedly said of her role, "I would have much
rather played one of the servants. They were much nicer people.") She got
her start on the West End stage. Her roles there included starring opposite Alec
Clunes in Carrington VC (1953) and as Portia in Shakespeare's The
Merchant of Venice (1955). Corners slightly worn. Heavily toned. Tear and
crease on left edge. Ink transfer. Otherwise, fine condition.
