The first "underground" rock group, the Fugs formed at the Peace Eye bookstore owned by Ed Sanders, in New York's East Village in 1964. The group took an anti-war stance and were well-known peace activists. Andy Warhol was a fan, among others. They broke lyrical taboos of popular music helping pave the way for other groups.The Fugs recorded on the ESP, Atlantic, and Reprise labels. Ken Weaver is an American singer, songwriter and musician. A drummer, Weaver joined Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg to form the rock band The Fugs in 1964. He wrote and sang the songs "Slum Goddess", "I Couldn't Get High", "Dust Devil" and "Four Minutes to Twelve", and contributed to numerous others. He later wrote Texas Crude, a collection of Texan slang, with illustrations by R. Crumb, in 1983. Edward Sanders (b. 1939) is an American poet, singer, social activist, environmentalist, author, publisher and longtime member of the band The Fugs. He has been called a bridge between the Beat and Hippie generations. In late 1964, Sanders founded The Fugs with Tuli Kupferberg. Sanders received a Guggenheim Fellowship in poetry in 1983, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in poetry in 1987. His Thirsting for Peace in a Raging Century, Selected Poems 1961-1985 won an American Book Award in 1988. John Anderson was the bassist for the Fugs in the band's first series of live shows and underground happenings on the '60s Greenwich Village scene. Anderson played on the first two albums by the band, material that is best described as avant-garde bordering on filthy. Anderson did make some contributions to the band creatively, designing the red, white, and blue Fugs logo that was stenciled on the bass drum head during the band's heyday. Toned.
