THE GOODBYE PEOPLE PLAY CAST: HERB GARDNER, HERSCHEL BERNARDI and MELANIE MAYRON
Cover from the Playbill for the 1979 Broadway revival of The Goodbye People, signed by Tony-winning author Herb Gardner, Tony and Emmy-nominated actor Herschel Bernardi and actor Melanie Mayron
Show bill cover signed "Herschel Bernardi", "Herb Gardner" and "Melanie/Mayron", all in blue ink. Blue ink notations on verso in unknown hand. B/w and color, 5¾x9. Playbill cover from the Belasco Theatre production of Gardner's play The Goodbye People. This appears to be from the 1979 revival, which featured Herschel and Mayron. Multi-talented GARDNER (1934-2003) had his first brush with fame drawing popular cartoons called The Nebbishes, which enjoyed a short syndication run in the 1950s and were marketed on numerous items before he hung it up around 1960. A novelist, short story writer and playwright, his first Broadway play A Thousand Clowns (1962-1963) was nominated for Best Play and earned him a writing Oscar when it was transfered to the screen in 1965. He later struck Tony gold when his play I'm Not Rappaport (1985-1988) won Best Play honors. Gardner also earned a Pulitzer Prize nod for his play Conversations With My Father (1992-1993). The Goodbye People was Mayron's sole Broadway credit of this biography. American actor BERNARDI (1923-1986) earned an Emmy for his recurring character of Lt. Jacobi in the TV series Peter Gunn (1958-1961). Herschel also played the lead role in the Broadway productions of Fiddler on the Roof (1965-1970, replacement, and 1981) and Zorba (1968-1969). He received Emmy nominations for Zorba and the revival of Fiddler on the Roof. After many TV guest appearances, MAYRON, born in 1952, played the Emmy-winning role of Melissa Steadman in TV's Thirtysomething (1987-1991). Important feature film roles included Girlfriends (1979), Missing (1982) and My Blue Heaven (1990). She has more recently turned her talents to directing, beginning with The Baby Sitters Club (1995) and continuing with TV's Arli$$ (1998-2002), Dawson's Creek (1999), The Naked Brothers Band (2007-2008), In Treatment (2008), 90210 (2008-2009) and Drop Dead Diva (2009). Lightly toned and soiled. Parts of Herschel's signature have poor adhesion in places but is legible. Neatly torn from show bill at left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
