THE HIGGINS FAMILY MOVIE CAST: JAMES, LUCILE and RUSSELL GLEASON
An acting family in real life, they played the Higgins family on stage and in 7 Republic Pictures.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Anna/from/The Gleasons/Lucile/1939", "Russell", "Jim". B/w/8x10. Lucile Webster (1888-1947) married fellow actor James Gleason (1886-1959) in 1905. They appeared frequently together on stage and in films, usually playing a couple! With their son Russell, they appeared in the Higgins family series, first a stage play and then a sequence of 7 movies, Republic Pictures' attempt to compete with the Andy Hardy films, beginning in 1938. (This photo must be from the stage version.) Lucile Gleason was a Treasurer and then Vice President of the Screen Actors Guild, and the USO Mother of the Year in 1947. Russell died young. After enlisting for World War II, he fell to his death from a Manhattan Hotel window before his unit shipped out for Europe. James Gleason outlived both his wife and son, playing character roles and also working as a dialogue coach and occasional scriptwriter. His last film appearance was in The Last Hurrah (1958). Toned. Creased corners. Otherwise fine condition.
